John 17:2 - Conditional eternal life?
Does John 17:2 have conditions?
John 17:1: "Jesus spoke these (things), and having-lifted-up His eyes to heaven, said, “Father, the hour has-come. Glorify Your Son, so-that the Son may-glorify You —"
John 17:2: "just-as You-gave Him authority (over) all flesh in-order-that (as to) all that You-have-given Him, HE-MAY-GIVE eternal life (to) them."
He "may" give eternal life:
Jesus said to the Father: "the Son may-glorify You — just-as You-gave Him authority (over) all flesh in-order-that (as to) all that You-have-given Him, HE-MAY-GIVE eternal life (to) them" (John 17:1-2).
About all that the Father has given the Son, it is written about the Son that "HE-MAY-GIVE eternal life (to) them" (John 17:2).
The Greek word "HE-MAY-GIVE" is in the Subjunctive mood, which is the mood of possibility and potentiality, meaning that the action described may or may not occur, depending upon other conditions.
"Give" eternal life:
Jesus indicated for example that He GIVES eternal life to those who are His sheep who hear His voice and follow Him, as Jesus said: "My sheep hear My voice. And I know them, and they-follow Me. And-I GIVE them eternal life" (John 10:27-28).
