What is death (from sin)?
Death can come from sin.
James wrote: "SIN, having-been-completed, BRINGS-FORTH DEATH" (James 1:15).

Someone can become dead (from sin)... after having been alive:
Luke 15 (the prodigal son):
Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son who went away from the house of his father. At some point the prodigal son came back to the house of his father, and it was said about him that: "this son (of) mine was DEAD, and he-became-ALIVE-AGAIN" (Luke 15:24).
Here the son became "ALIVE-AGAIN" (Luke 15:24), suggesting that he was ALIVE before being "DEAD" (Luke 15:24), to then becoming "ALIVE-AGAIN" (Luke 15:24).
This son may have been dead from sin, as it was written that he said when coming back: "the son said (to) him, ‘Father, I-SINNED against heaven and before you" (Luke 15:21).
Romans 7:
Paul wrote: "I was once ALIVE apart-from (the) Law. But the commandment having-come, SIN became-alive and I DIED" (Romans 7:9-10).
Here Paul said "I was once ALIVE" (Romans 7:9), but then because of "SIN" (Romans 7:9) he "DIED" (Romans 7:10). This would described a death from sin.
1 Timothy 5:
Paul wrote: "the (one who is) truly widow and has-been-left-alone has-put-(her)-hope upon God, and continues-in petitions and prayers (by) night and (by) day. But the (one) LIVING-INDULGENTLY HAS-DIED (while) living" (1 Timothy 5:5-6).
Here in contrast to the widow who "has-put-(her)-hope upon God" (1 Timothy 5:5), it is possible for a widow to be "LIVING-INDULGENTLY" (1 Timothy 5:6), and so that widow "HAS-DIED (while) living" (1 Timothy 5:6).
This widow "HAS-DIED" (1 Timothy 5:6) in the past, which suggests that an event may have happened. If so, this widow may have been ALIVE before that event happened.
James 5:
James wrote: "MY BROTHERS, if ANYONE AMONG YOU errs from the truth and someone turns him back, let-him-know that the (one) having-turned-back (A) SINNING (ONE) from (the) error (of) his way will-save his soul out-of DEATH" (James 5:19-20).
In James 2, James called "MY BROTHERS" (James 2:1) the ones "HAVING THE FAITH (OF) OUR LORD JESUS" (James 2:1). Someone having the faith of Jesus may be ALIVE.
This could suggest that this person in James 5 may have been ALIVE, before needing to have their soul saved "out-of DEATH" (James 5:20) after erring from the truth.
This "DEATH" (James 5:20) would also be a death from sin as this person was described there as "(A) SINNING (ONE)" (James 5:20).

Revelation 3:
It is written in Revelation 3 to "the church in Sardis" (Revelation 3:1): "I-know your works: that you-have (a) name that YOU-ARE-ALIVE, and you-are DEAD" (Revelation 3:1).
Even though this "church" (Revelation 3:1) had a name that they were ALIVE, yet they were "DEAD" (Revelation 3:1).
It may be inferred that because this was a "church" (Revelation 3:1), they may have been ALIVE prior to now be described as "DEAD" (Revelation 3:1).
This may describe a DEATH from SIN because it is then said to them to "be-remembering how you-have-received and you-heard, and be-keeping (it), and REPENT" (Revelation 3:3). Here they may need to REPENT from SIN specifically.
Someone can REPENT from SIN specifically, as for example it is written several verses earlier for someone "TO-REPENT from her SEXUAL-IMMORALITY" (Revelation 2:21).
