Luke 8:12 - First soil: Word taken away from their heart?

Does Luke 8:12 have conditions?

Luke 8:12: "And the (people) along the road are the (ones) having-heard. Then the devil comes and takes-away the word from their heart in-order-that they-may not be-saved, having-believed."

Not saved?

Jesus said that some people "along the road are the (ones) having-heard. Then the devil comes and takes-away the word from their heart in-order-that THEY-MAY NOT BE-SAVED, having-believed" (Luke 8:12).

Here even though people were ones "having-heard" (Luke 8:12) the word, and having the word in "their heart" (Luke 8:12) as a result, yet they did not come to be ones who would "BE-SAVED" (Luke 8:12).

SALVATION in the Bible can be described as conditional.

Not having believed?

Jesus said that some people "along the road are the (ones) having-heard. Then the devil comes and takes-away the word from their heart in-order-that they-may not be-saved, HAVING-BELIEVED" (Luke 8:12).

Here even though people were ones "having-heard" (Luke 8:12) the word, and having the word in "their heart" (Luke 8:12) as a result, yet they did not come to be ones "HAVING-BELIEVED" (Luke 8:12).

Someone does not BELIEVE automatically.

To BELIEVE is a condition of SALVATION, which is why it is written that "they-may not BE-SAVEDHAVING-BELIEVED" (Luke 8:12).

The word is "taken away" from their heart?

Jesus said that some people "along the road are the (ones) having-heard. Then the devil comes and TAKES-AWAY THE WORD FROM THEIR HEART" (Luke 8:12).

Even though these people had the word in "THEIR HEART" (Luke 8:12), yet it was then TAKEN AWAY, which means that it did not remain in them. As a result, they will need to hear it again and have it in their hearts again if they want the word to even be in them again.

The words of Christ can abide in a person conditionally, as Jesus used the conditional particle "IF" when He said: "IF you-may-abide in Me, and MY WORDS MAY-ABIDE IN YOU" (John 15:7).

Not "understanding" the word?

Jesus said that regarding the first soil (as described in Matthew 13, Mark 4 & Luke 8): "Anyone hearing the word (of) the kingdom and NOT UNDERSTANDING (IT) — the evil (one) comes and snatches-away the (thing) having-been-sown in his heart. This (person) is the (one) having-been-sown (the seed) along the road" (Matthew 13:19).

Here the word of the kingdom is snatched away from the heart by the evil one because of the person "NOT UNDERSTANDING (IT)" (Matthew 13:19).

Repentance: a change of understanding with the heart?

After the word was sown in "THEIR HEART" (Luke 8:12) yet they were "NOT UNDERSTANDING (IT)" (Matthew 13:19).

REPENTANCE can mean a change of UNDERSTANDING (WITH THE HEART) from one subject toward another.

Repentance is not automatic?

Here even though people were ones "having-heard" (Luke 8:12) the word, and having the word in "their heart" (Luke 8:12) as a result, yet they did not come to "UNDERSTANDING (IT)" (Matthew 13:19). A change of UNDERSTANDING, that is REPENTANCE, is not automatic.

Repentance and believing?

The people as a result did not come to be ones "HAVING-BELIEVED" (Luke 8:12).

When proclaiming "the word (of) the kingdom" (Matthew 13:19), Jesus proclaimed to REPENT and to BELIEVE, as Jesus said: "the kingdom (of) God has-drawn-near. REPENT, and BELIEVE in the good-news" (Mark 1:15).

REPENTING can lead someone to BELIEVE, even though it is also not necessarily the case.

Repentance and being saved?

The people as a result did not come to be ones who would "BE-SAVED" (Luke 8:12). Indeed, REPENTANCE can also be necessary to not perish.

The word is "trampled" underfoot?

It is written about the people of the first soil that "some seed fell along the road. And IT-WAS-TRAMPLED(-UNDERFOOT) [katapateо́ 2662 in Greek]" (Luke 8:5). They TRAMPLED the word after hearing it.

Jesus said: "Do not give the holy (thing to) the dogs, nor throw your pearls in-front-of the PIGS, so that they-will not perhaps TRAMPLE [katapateо́ 2662 in Greek] them with their feet, and having-turned, tear you to-pieces" (Matthew 7:6).

Here Jesus indicated that it is "PIGS" (Matthew 7:6) that are the ones who "TRAMPLE [katapateо́ 2662 in Greek]" (Matthew 7:6) the pearls given to them.

A pig is not understanding?

The "PIGS" (Matthew 7:6) are not UNDERSTANDING what value can be attached to "pearls" (Matthew 7:6) which is why they end up TRAMPLING them. In the same way, it is interpreted by Jesus that this first soil were ones "having-heard" (Luke 8:12) the word and yet they were not "UNDERSTANDING (IT)" (Matthew 13:19).

A pig is subdued by the defilements of the world?

Jesus said: "Do not give the holy (thing to) the DOGS, nor throw your pearls in-front-of the PIGS, so that they-will not perhaps TRAMPLE [katapateо́ 2662 in Greek] them with their feet, and having-turned, tear you to-pieces" (Matthew 7:6).

Peter wrote: "if — having-escaped-from THE DEFILEMENTS (OF) THE WORLD by (the) knowledge (of) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and again having-been-entangled (by) these (things) — THEY-ARE-SUBDUED, (then) the last (state) has-become worse (for) them (than) the first [...] The (thing) of the true proverb has-happened to them — “(The) DOG having-returned to (its) own vomit”, and, “(The) SOW having-washed (herself returns) to (a) wallowing (of the) mire”" (2 Peter 2:20-22).

PIGS may be likened to people who "ARE-SUBDUED" (2 Peter 2:20) by "THE DEFILEMENTS (OF) THE WORLD" (2 Peter 2:22), as they are "wallowing (in the) mire”" (2 Peter 2:20-22).

Having a need to lay aside all filthiness?

The people of the first soil TRAMPLED the word after hearing it, and as a result did not come to be ones who would "BE-SAVED" (Luke 8:12).

James wrote: "HAVING-LAID-ASIDE ALL FILTHINESS AND ABUNDANCE (OF) BADNESS, receive with gentleness the ingrowing word being-able TO-SAVE your souls" (James 1:21).

The "PIGS" (Matthew 7:6) would need to first be "washed" (2 Peter 2:22), by "HAVING-LAID-ASIDE ALL FILTHINESS AND ABUNDANCE (OF) BADNESS" (James 1:21) in order to then "receive with gentleness the ingrowing word being-able TO-SAVE your souls" (James 1:21).

This can be done through REPENTANCE from sins.
