What are dead works?
It is written in Hebrews about "REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS" (Hebrews 6:1).
What are "DEAD WORKS" (Hebrews 6:1)?
It is written in James that "FAITH without WORKS is DEAD" (James 2:17). FAITH (upon God) without WORKS is a DEAD FAITH.

The FAITH connected to these dead works would be specifically the "FAITH upon God" (Hebrews 6:1). REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS and FAITH UPON GOD are two foundational teachings that are connected in the same verse with the preposition "AND", as it is written about "repentance from dead works AND faith upon God" (Hebrews 6:1).
The basics of this teaching
It may be assumed to apply the teaching of "REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS" (Hebrews 6:1) that we first have an UNDERSTANDING that there are WORKS that we may be doing WITHOUT FAITH upon God (which would be DEAD WORKS), and that there can be WORKS that we can do FROM FAITH upon God.
And so we have to CHANGE OUR UNDERSTANDING away FROM doing WORKS WITHOUT FAITH upon God toward only doing WORKS FROM FAITH upon God.
If we do WORKS that are from a belief contrary to the FAITH upon God, these WORKS would be DEAD WORKS and we have to REPENT FROM THOSE.
It is important to know what constitutes an actual FAITH upon God so that we do not do any WORKS with a belief contrary to it (aka: DEAD WORKS).
